my first love.

january 01 2005.

amazingly, I wasn't very hungover. the weather was beautiful - if oddly unseasonal.

I didn't think of myself as a runner. I thought of myself as a gym rat who ran occassionaly ... 10 minutes here, 20 minutes there, before or after 10-20 minutes on the elliptical or the stationary bike. I had done a couple 5Ks.

I was running down St. Paul street when I thought (and I remember this. I do.) I should run a marathon.

it was always on my life list. it was always something I wanted to do, something to do once (ha.) and check off. and I thought -- for the first time and at the beginning of this journey and it's a thought I've had several times since -- if not now, when?

[because there will always be something]

Later that week I registered for the Baltimore Marathon.

___

now that I am not "in training" and just kind of puttering around, doing what I want when I want for however long I wish ... I find myself lacing up. I find myself lacing up and running familiar routes in my city and seeing the Trapeze School and the baby ducks in the Inner Harbor and the water around Fort McHenry.

maybe it's because it takes too long to drive to the gym and change into a swimsuit. maybe it's because it's a pain to drag the trainer up from the basement.

maybe it's just because I Love Running.

  1. I hear you!! I love running too!!

And I love fall running, the air seems so much fresher and the sounds of your steps in the crunchy leaves... =)

Just wish those stupid injuries would leave me alone!! Running 5K is not enough for me, I need the time to think, get in the zone and just run as a habit, almost effortless... Run for me LOL

  2. Isn't it nice to just run, to run for a change; no pressure!! It's raining today or I'd be back at Mission Bay running Fiesta Island. You know me, little novice runner but I enjoyed everything around me; people, other runners, exercise classes going on in the park - a lot to look at and enjoy and as well, it made it easier.

  3. When I saw the title, I thought it might be about running. And as Sonia said, fall running is the best.

  4. That is so odd because I have been in the same odd place. After my last tri and some challenges with my bike I just want to run. For some reason it feels better. Maybe it is how work is going, or the weather, or that marathon major season is ramping up...I don't know, but I love the run. All of this a good thing because I have a couple of halfs lined up soon.

Although for me running is NOT my first love. Not by a long stretch...I really enjoy it now, but if you told me when I was younger that I would like to run as an adult, I would accuse you of drug use.

Right now I am trying to hunt down a used treadmill for the house since the days are getting shorter.

  7. Fall running IS the best. Up here in the frigid midwest we especially appreciate fall because we know what is around the corner. Spring is 2nd to fall because you know the first day it hits 40 degrees everyone is out in their shorts and singlets!

Congrats on registering for the marathon. I take it with tri season over it left you feeling...well....lost??? It is always nice to have some sort of goal out there. Good luck!
